A couple of remedies work for me. Here are a few to try out or choose from ....
1) Gargle with warm salt water.
2) Take Robitussin or Mucinex.
3) DEFINITELY drink a TON of water and warm drinks with lemon/honey.
4) Sounds scary, but this is safe..... mix about a 4 oz. combo of 1/2 warm water and 1/2 hydrogen peroxide. GARGLE (not swallowing!).... and spit. It will not harm you if some of this accidently trickles down your throat. This also , supposedly, stops strep throat in it's tracks and REALLY helps with laryngitis... lifting all that PHLEGM off your vocal cords/voice box. The hydrogen peroxide KILLS the germs. (Remember to mix half and half with the warm water.) This works for me.
5) Gargle warm green tea with lemon/ honey.
6) Mix 2 Tbsp. honey with 1 Tbsp. cinnamon. Stir and eat the pasty mixture. This is nature's version of Robitussin.
So... pick and choose what works for you. No, I am NOT a doctor, but I have read a GREAT deal on medical remedies after a lifetime of upper respiratory issues. I have saved myself MANY a trip to the doctor with the above remedies. Hope one of these helps!
Lemons can really help clear the phlegm in your throat. You can gargle with a solution of lemon water that is not too strong. Or you can cut a lemon in half then squeeze the juice into a cup. Take a straw and stick it in the lemon juice and then sealing the top with your index finger, put the straw in the back of your throat and lift your finger. It probably won't burn, but it will be really, really, SOUR! Repeat these steps and it should cut the crud and phlegm.
EDIT:
Use a mist vaporizer, drink more water, get some exercise & occasionally cough to help loosen & remove the mucus. If it is in the nose too, try a Neti (aka Nettie) pot to irrigate.
See the related question below for a recipe for a solution to use to gargle to help a sore throat and to clear phlegm and mucus.
Drink a lot of fluids, hot tea, or eat Popsicles or potato chips. If its not gone in a week, then contact your health care professional for advice.
Drinking hot water will break up the mucus in the back iof the throat.
Treat the underlying symptoms such as a cold or flu, or quit smoking. Spit phlegm out when you cough it up, rather than swallowing it. Take an expectorant medicine, such as Robitussen, or try other remedies such as a steam bath with eucalyptus oil.
Ask the pharmacist at the drugstore what she suggests. Expectorant cough preparations that are over the counter medications can help, as well as drinking more fluids (water) that will help thin the secretions.
One of the best choices is a cough medicine that includes the active ingredient guaifenesin. Many famous national brands contain this medicine that is made from the guaiac tree that was discovered long ago by Native Americans. Look for the generic copy cat medicines on the shelves nearby to save costs.
Guaifenesin is also the active ingredient in Mucinex if you want to take a tablet instead of syrup (although there is sugar free cough medicine, too). To loosen the phlegm you will do better with products that say "expectorant" and not those that include "decongestants".
If you are not able to cough the phlegm up with the guifenesin, taken as directed on the label or by the pharmacist, in a day or two, or if you have a fever, contact your doctor.
Ejecting phlegm or mucus from the throat or lungs, by coughing.
Phlegm is a sticky substance produced by the respiratory system to help trap and clear away germs and irritants.
As far as know, the 'death rattle' is generally a fluid buildup in the back of the throat. People who are dying, their relaxes are slower and they most generally do not swallow the way that you would to get phlegm down the back of their throat. You'll usually notice that if you clear the persons mouth out from back to front with a swab they will not do it as much. Usually you can see the phlegm in the back of their throat as well which helps you know. Hope that helps some.
Common cold viruses are the ones that most commonly cause phlegm in your throat.

phlegm
The death rattle is a gurgling sound that occurs when a person is close to death and is usually caused by fluid in the throat. It is a common occurrence in the dying process and does not typically cause discomfort to the individual. Caregivers can help manage the symptoms for the comfort of the person nearing the end of life.
Phlegm in the throat can be super annoying but in all reality, phlegm and mucus serves an important role in the human body. Phlegm and mucus acts like the oil in a car does; it makes the engine move.
