usually (most likely) scientists will take a group of people (usually 100-1000) of the country's citizens and take each individuals life span, add them all together, then divide by how many participants there were. the resulting number is the estimated life expectancy of the nation.

ex: 100 people. life spans add up to 7580.5. life expectancy would be 75.8 years.
