Few people may get fat because they want to or because their significant other
wants them to. Some people will tell you that getting fat is fun. This is becoming increasingly common in today's day and age.
Some people get fat because of a hormonal imbalance. Others get fat because of an unhealthy diet. Most people get fat by eating too many high carbohydrate foods, such as refined (processed) carbohydrates, and not getting enough exercise. If you eat healthy foods and do cardio exercise you can lose fat. Fruits such berries, and non starchy vegetables, are much better snack options than refined (processed) carbohydrates.

Technically, an overweight person becomes a fat, or obese, person. An overweight persons metabolism is kinda screwed up, and does things like making a 200 calorie snack a 400 calorie snack. And because an overweight person usually doesn't get much excercize, the calories become heavy, big, fat cells, creatin extra weight and excess fat.

Too much junk, not enough physical activity
The basic reason is consuming more calories than are used by the body. Calories that are not used are stored as fat.
When glucose reaches the small intestine (after being eaten and then digested), it is absorbed through the lining of the small intestine and ends up in the bloodstream.
When the blood contains the right amount of glucose, the hormone called insulin (from the pancreas) stimulates the liver to convert the excess glucose (which is not needed for the moment) to glycogen and store it in the liver.
If then, more glucose is needed in the blood, another hormone stimulates the liver to release the glucose that it had been storing back into the blood.
This is how the body regulates blood sugar concentration.
However, if there is no more space in the liver for more glucose to be stored, any extra glucose is converted to fat and stored in special fat storage cells throughout the body.
Of course there are other reasons for picking up weight such as lack of exercise, but eating unhealthy food (too much glucose/sugar!) can not only cause people to gain weight, but also cause health problems too. This is why it's so important to eat healthily and to keep exercising.
