The natives always communicated exclusively using smoke signals, even when "whispering" in one on one situations. This was very difficult, especially in bed with no lights because while the fire was quite visible, the smoke was hard to see. It was also hard to discipline children who would not wait for the smoke signals that said "don't signal your father that way" and that sort of thing. It's impossible to verify this, but legend has it that it was particularly hard to make the letter Q in smoke, and that's why natives never knew that ducks say "quack quack" not "ack ack".
