Here's one version: You can be one person inside and act competely different outside. In short, if you have established thought patterns, habits, and behaviors -- only you know all of them as your real identity; making yourself completely different in public would be "hiding" your true identity. This is also "acting."

If you are Christian, it is very common to have a "hidden identity" in God. Ultimately, the doctrine makes it clear that those who choose this path will "die" to their old nature and become a brand new person. This is the case of a forgotten past identity. When one goes down this path, they must sacrifice their old "sinful" ways and become a "child of the light." Ultimately, their name will be changed and will be given a new name -- which has a focus on a changing "eternal identity" as to who they are, and who they will be. This "secret identity" would therefore be the changed heart, and a new "heir to the kingdom" which the world isn't supposed to see, because the things kept secret from the foundation of the world will only be revealed in these individuals. However, the world doesn't know this because the spiritual things of God are hidden, unless sought out. (according to the teachings of Jesus)

The other version: If you mean keeping your identity secret as in being anonymous in society, you simply can't these days. If you succeed, you're probably a criminal. Your Social Security number is assigned to you at birth; also, national registries keep good records in case investigations are necessary. You more than likely have dental records, and unless you change your name and eliminate every signed entry you've ever submitted publicly, you're going to remain a name and a number.
