ok, so i learned this in sceptpretiology a few years back... maybe it was a few weeks ago so what. When Chemical prestiolgits put radoactive tracing in medicine it causes a chemcial reaction, very similar to Diet Coke and Mentos, but on a very smaller scale. Some medicines that they use it in is headache pills such as advil. And get this. they use it in some erectial disfuntction medcine such as Viagra ;) But its mainly uses is in pain killers.

A few common examples:

Technetium is used by nuclear medicine physicians to image the heart muscle during a cardiac "stress test" to evaluate for a condition called myocardial ischemia from coronary artery disease. This radioactive tracer, which is chemically attached to another molecule, is taken up by the heart muscle (myocardium) in direct proportion to the perfusion, or blood flow, to that area of muscle, both during "rest" (before the actual stress of treadmilling or chemical -induced contraction of the heart) and after stress. The difference in the myocardial uptake of the technetium before and after the stress can identify areas of heart muscle that are ischemic, or deprived of blood flow, and infer which coronary artery circulation is blocked.

Technetium is also used to image the parathyroid glands to determine if there is an overactive parathyroid gland, (presumably from a benign tumor or hyperproliferative tissue called hyperplasia) a condition called hyperparathyroidism.

Iodine is used in nuclear medicine in a test called a thyroid uptake scan to image the thyroid gland to investigate cuases of hyperthyroidism, such as Graves disease, a solitary hyperfunctioning adenoma, or a toxic multinodular goiter. Another more powerful isotope of iodine is also used to treat the above diseases (in particular Graves disease) by destroying or "ablating" all the thyroid tissue, which can be curative.

Thus, radioactive elements are instrumental in both diagnosis and treatment of common medical diseases. I've ordered these tests in my practice many times with excellent results. There are many other applications, too.

Yttrium-90 is used in the radioimmunotherapy of solid large tumors.

Gallium-67 Citrate is used in Hodgkin's disease, lymphomas, and bronchogenic carcinomas, as well as for the diagnosis of Pneuomocystis carinii pneumonia for AIDS.

Sodium Iodide-123 is used to diagnose and evaluate thyroid function.
