What are chemical combinations created to imitate the effects of controlled drugs?

Synthetic drugs, such as designer drugs or research chemicals, are created to imitate the effects of controlled substances. These substances are often developed with slight chemical modifications to avoid legal restrictions while still producing similar effects to the controlled drugs they are designed to mimic. However, synthetic drugs can be more dangerous due to variations in potency and potential unknown side effects.

Do all club drugs have pretty much the same effect?

Nothing could be farther from the truth! Club drugs are very frequently cut with all sorts of things; cocaine, methamphetmine, barbiturates, DXM, ephedrine, PCP...etc. Various drug combinations produce very different effects, but this is quite dangerous. The biggest danger in this is an unsafe combination, especially when strong stimulants are combined with strong depressants--it can stop your heart! That aside, the drugs that people use at clubs vary greatly. The classic club drugs are stimulants, but ecstasy, cocaine, methamphetamine, and various other stimulating drugs are all different (ranging from subtle to obvious distinctions) based on their relative action on Dopamine, Serotonin, Norepinephrin, and other neurotransmitters/brain chemicals. Drugs that strongly affect dopamine give euphoria, those that affect serotonin cause hallucinations, and those on norepinephrin increase concentration. Various depressants and dissociatives are common too. To learn more about recreational drugs, check out Erowid.org. It includes personal experiences and stock information on drugs effects. I don't condone the use of illicit drugs, but I find their actions on brain and behavior fascinating, hence my extensive knowledge of them.
