It's one of many possible symptoms:

  • fatigue
  • abdominal pain
  • intestinal bleeding
  • itching (rash)
  • jaundice
  • nausea and vomiting
  • broken blood vessels under skin
  • easy bruising
  • swollen abdomen and legs
  • weakness
  • weight loss or gain

The most common cause of liver disease is hepatitis and cirrhosis.

  • Hep A: most common, spread by contaminated water.
  • Hep B: spread by infected blood, semen or vaginal secretions.
  • Hep C: spread by direct blood to blood contact.
  • Hep D: spread by infected blood or needles, only contracted if person already has hep B.
  • Cirrhosis: caused by heavy drinking, inherited disorders, obesity, hep B and infections.

There are very few initial warning signs of cirrhosis or hepatitis. There are initial flu-like symptoms and then a quick onset of the other symptoms. If you are at risk of liver disease and experiencing symptoms go to the ER and get tested.
