Sex is not a necessity for individuals; it is only essential for species as a way for them to continue surviving. Most people desire sex, because of hormones which cause these desires in order to prolong a species's continued existence or as a way to create an emotional connection. Sex is also desired by most people because the body rewards itself through pleasant rushes of endorphins, called orgasms, during sex. However, there are people who naturally feel no sexual desire (asexuals, not to be confused with asexual reproduction) or do not begin to feel sexual desire until an emotional connection has been formed with a person (demisexuals) along with a whole group of people who identify as somewhere in the grey area in-between asexual and sexual.
Sex also implies contact between two (or more) people, and this is not necessary for either orgasm or self-fulfillment when masturbation is possible.
