In the novel the village by the sea written by Anita Desai, we come across a lot of characters. Out of all of them in chapter three we get to know about a person called the medicine man, introduced by the toddy seller known as hira-bhai. The medicine man is a minor character in the novel . The medicine man is an old man who comes to the village with his cow blowing his horn and banging his drum early in the morning, and also he uses traditional herbal plants, powders and barks. The medicine man was a sharp looking man who kept all kinds of powders and pills in packets tide into the faults of his white dhoti and his pink turban. He treated that village is for boils aches and fevers. He was also known for the special puja he does for the people who are too ill to get benefit from his powders - the mad, the unhappy and dying. But he who represented the medicine man was a smuggler who before unrealistic traditional activities and get money from the uneducated villages.
