Thrush is Candida (Candida Albicans) is a pathogenic fungus that is commonly found on the skin, in the mouth, vagina and gut and also the mucous membranes such as the nose. Most common is the mouth and vagina. Thrush can appear out of nowhere for no apparent reason. For some women it is difficult to get rid of thrush. This is generally either caused by: * Poor nutrition * Auto Immune Disease * Certain traumas from surgery where the bodies immune system is weakened * Some medications. Antibiotics is noted for causing Thrush in people. * Hormonal changes (can be caused by Birth Control pills/patches in some women) or in pregnant women. * Some older women are more likely to experience Thrush because their tissues are thinning and they are more susceptible to bacteria or, if they have other health issues and are on more antibiotics for urinary tract problems. * Poor dental hygiene. Teeth should be brushed after every meal and especially before going to bed (that's when most bacteria is present.) With a soft toothbrush brushing teeth, gums, roof of the mouth and tongue. Flossing is very important. If one has dentures or partials they should be sure to rinse their teeth and soak them in Polident for an example and before putting the false teeth back into the mouth they should be rinsed well. A toothbrush should be changed for a new one every 2 - 3 months. Toothbrushes should not be left out on the bathroom counter, but put in the medicine cabinet to help keep bacteria off it. Your doctor is trying very hard to get rid of your Thrush and sometimes in some people Thrush can take a long time to get rid of, but it does not cause cancer. Talk to your doctor about ways to boost your immune system. Another home remedy that has worked (you should discuss this with your doctor) is 2 tablespoons of Milk of magnesia (salt base and generally used for people with constipation) and 1 teaspoon of vinegar and rinse the mouth thoroughly. Do not swallow, but spit it out in the sink and do not rinse your mouth afterward. Do this twice a day for 5 days to a week.
