You can, but it is not a good idea. Alcohol is a powerful diuretic, meaning that it causes liquids to pass from your body more rapidly than they normally would. The penicillin antibiotics are water soluble, as are most antibiotics. Alcohol may cause it to pass through the body too quickly to do its job properly. It does not react directly with the drug, however.
I don't think anyone who doesn't know how to spell alcohol should be drinking it in the first place

Yes you can. There are a couple of antibiotics that you can have severe reactions when combining alcohol, one even death. However, penicillin is not one of those. It does make you dehydrated sometimes so drink lots of water. When you are healing alcohol probably isn't a good idea, but if you are an alcoholic probably not a good time to withdraw, but I would try to cut down. Penicillin was one of the first drugs used to treat venereal disease so doctors spread the rumor that the drug wouldn't work if you drank. They were worried that promiscuous people would lose their inhibitions and spread the disease before the penicillin kicked in. The reduction in efficacy was never true.

O.K.

here is your answer, but better to read the pamphlet that comes with your prescription than listen to me, someone with no medical background. I did have major oral surgery that freaked me out so I was jonesing

for a glass of wine so I looked this up. However, I am on heavy doses of ibuprofen, so as much as I yearn, I will pass until I am better! Good luck. Try to stick with just one glass while you are sick and avoid it if you are taking ibuprofen or narcotics! Feel better.

Drinking alcohol while taking any anti-biotic decreases the effect of the medicine, therefore prolonging the illness or disease.
