Augmentin and Augmentin XR are a combination of 2 medications: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.
As with all antibiotics, there is always a potential risk of developing a new allergy to the medication (in this case, an allergy could be to the amoxicillin or to the clavulanic acid) if an allergy developed.
Usually, antibiotics begin working within 24-48 hours, but most infections need a full 10 days to 2 weeks to completely clear.
Most activities can be resumed within a few days, depending on symptoms and how the person feels. If a person had a continuing fever, for example, the person should avoid strenuous activities. Fever plus strenuous activity could cause dehydration, or more fatigue, or weakness and dizziness. If the antibiotic was given for bronchitis or pneumonia, the person should ask a doctor before resuming sports activities because the activity could trigger bronchial spasms and difficulty breathing.
Infection and treatment with antibiotics requires common sense measures. If you are fevered, feel tired or weak, or have had a cough, don't engage in sports without a Dr's okay. If you've already been on antibiotics for several days and have had no fever or cough for at least several days, it should be okay to resume activities. *Never play while "sick". You risk making yourself sicker (or sick again) or risk spreading your respiratory illness to other people.
