To be honest I don't think fruit helps AS MUCH as vegatables. However with combo of both and excersise you could probably lose weight fast.
Melon is very watery and too much will give a poodle diarrhea. But if given in a small amount, it probably won't hurt. Definitely do not let it eat the rind though.
