No, It is only harmful if swallowed. Using mouthwash helps kill bacteria in your mouth, and keep your teeth healthy by doing preventative maintenance by killing plaque causing bacteria.

Actually that is correct, mouthwash works by reducing the bacteria in your mouth. So far so good. HOWEVER...the 1998 Nobel Prize in physiology was awarded for work that identified the nitrate, nitrite, nitric oxide cycle in the human body. Turns out nitrates which are not so good for us are broken down into nitrites which are good for us, in the mouth by the bacteria that live there. Nitrites are very important as they are further converted by the body into nitric oxide which is a vasodilator which reduces blood pressure and is very important to the health of the epithelial cells in veins and arteries. It also greatly reduces the damage caused by oxidative stress following re-perfusion subsequent to a coronary occlusion. About 25% of the nitrate that does make it through to the gut is reabsorbed and secreted through the salivary glands to give the bacteria another chance to produce more nitrite.

Bottom line is, when we use mouthwash we reduce all those helpful bacteria and suffer the consequences. Like everything else, just because someone makes something doesn't mean you should use it.

I asked this very question of my dentist just yesterday -- not exactly can it kill you, but will it help kill periodontal bacteria. The dentist wasn't fond of the notion that it might be remedial, but she also said nothing about it's being harmful.

I've actually tried using rubbing alcohol as a mouthwash, and -- aside from it's tasting absolutely AWFUL in the mouth -- I experienced no ill side effects whatsoever. So no, I would say a drop is most likely NOT going to kill you, but it probably doesn't do much to help you either. There are better things to drink and/or to swish.

If you drink too much you can get high and while you're igh and you drink more...yes it could kill you

Mouthwash is not intended to be drunk- it is an antiseptic. Swallowing a very small amount is not fatal, but large quantities of it are NOT good for you. More likely to make you throw up.
