A third component of heart health is maintaining a healthy body weight. Individuals who are as little as 10 pounds overweight for their height are potentially straining their heart. Carrying extra weight makes the heart work harder to pump blood through the body. Making the heart work harder may cause damaged and result in decreased heart function.
