Alex's dad does not have his powers because when there is a family with more than one wizard when they all come of age they have a wizard battle and whoever wins gets to keep their powers. So Alex's dad did not win......SO we thought But in the episode Alex In the Middle when Alex's dad(Jerry)'s brother comes to visit Jerry tells his kids that a wizard can not Mary a non-wizard and when Jerry met Teresa(his wife) he loved her so much that he gave up his powers to marry Teresa.
