I cant remember if a reason is stated because it was a while ago a read the books however most likely because Percy is strong in combat and would have no problem keeping people at bay. Also if i remember correctly they were near a river if they were in defense which gave Percy an advantage.

The reason why i support and think that way is because they both had jealous actions to each other affairs ( Luke Castellan,Rachel Dare,Calypso,and even a little bit to Thalia).
