Charlie Chaplin did not talk in his first movies, from 1914 - 1927 because all films had no sound back then. When sound eventually did come in, he did not want to ruin the mystery of his little tramp character's voice, so he continued making silent movies for the duration of the 1930's before eventually making is first talkie in 1941. From then on, he always spoke in his movies.
