When Walt Disney created Mickey he was first drawn in several different poses to create a guide for how Mickey should look. This is needed so other animators that help draw the Cartoons would make Mickey the same way. He tried to turn Mickey's ear and found that it depending on the angle Mickey would no longer look like the character. The ears look distorted. In the class took on Walt Disney I saw one of those early reference sheets and I have to say the ears look more like horns than ears. So no matter how Mickey turns his head the ears stay towards the audience. However they normally overlayed a part of his head to make the picture agree with the direction the head was facing. They would also tilt the head a little making the farther ear slightly above the other ear.
