Perhaps these were the words of the Invisible Man himself and Wells wanted to emphasisze his difference from a normal person. One way of doing this in literature is to use Italics or other typographical differentiation. Italics are generally lighter than bold type, so would be a man who could walk through walls! It also could have been written in script or play-dialogue form but Wells did not opt for this. All of this assumes you are talking about the H.G. Wells novel and not the book with the same title by Ralph Ellison which is NOT science fictional.

The first application of any new discovery seems to be military. In the 'Invisible Man' by H. G. Wells, the only application that could be found for invisibility was political assassination.
