The Green Lantern is actually a class of character, rather than a specific character.

The term, "Green Lantern" refers to anyone who has joined to Green Lantern Corps. These are basically the police force of the universe, and are armed with the Emerald Rings, one per lantern (except in certain circumstances, where more rings may be awarded for exceptional performance( See: "Alpha Lanters"), which allow the user to create objects, mainlyfor usein combat, based on the willpower of the lantern and their imagination. Although the rings do have a power limit (sometimes this can limit what the ring can do, as the willpower of a lantern can at times be greater than the remaining energy in the ring), and do need to be recharged every now and again, they are mainly powered by those two factors.

A lanter is chosen by the ring, which will seek out a new candidate when its own is deceased, for showing the ability to overcome great fear. They are then informed of the risks and benefits of joining the Green Lanter Corps.

Each planet that has even one lantern, usually has only one, although Earth has at least three. There is, as such, usually only one lanter per sector of space. Earth is, again, an exception to this, and therefore, needing only one for that sector, multiple lanters from it may be assigned missions into other sectors to aid the lanterns there.

Green Lanterns are one of the heavy hitter from the DC Universe, and have been getting stronger through the years since their creation. Originally, the only weakness of a green lanter was the color yellow, as their rings did not work on it. However, as the years went on, the creator(s) of the Green Lantern made it so that only those whose willpower was weak could be essentially disarmed by any member of the Sinestro Corps (this was started by Sinestro, who was a former Green Lantern, but turned evil. The Sinestro Corps' uniform colors are black and yellow, and their rings are yellow, as are the things which they create with their rings.) just because of their color.

A few examples of the power, dependability, and reputation of Green Lanterns are, for one, when, after the one lantern that resides with the Justice League was defeated by Kid Amazo, the rest of the League was extremely concerned about the odds of defeating him. Then, later on, the same lantern showed up tospeak withan intergalactic fugitive named Konvikt, who had a very small partner that rode on his shoulder, when he defended himself against a police officer who discharged his weapon at him. Upon his arrival, the small assistant to the enraged Konvikt was alarmed, and frantically cautioned his partner to mind his temper, lest the lantern be forced to use his ring, claiming that they might have a chance of getting the lantern to help them back home.
