Popeye was originally created by Elzie Crisler Segar in the comic strip ''Thimble Theater''. Popeye was a secondary character to the Oyl family, including Olive, her brother Castor, their parents, and Olive's boyfriend, Ham Gravy. The series also introduced the Sea Hag and other classic characters. Eventually the series was renamed as "Thimble Theater starring Popeye the Sailor Man," and later simply "Popeye." The strip was carried on by Bud Sagendorf, and currently on weekends by Hy Eisman.
