Clarence Thomas is only the second African-American to sit on the Supreme Court. He was nominated by George H. W. Bush to replace the retiring Thurgood Marshall (the first African-American Justice) in 1991.
Thomas was made infamous during the Senate confirmation hearing, lead by Republican-turned-Democrat Senator Arlen Specter, when a former employee, lawyer Anita Hill, accused him of sexual harassment. No legal action was taken against Thomas due to lack of convincing evidence, but the Senate Judiciary Committee was split 7-7 in their opinion and sent his nomination to the Senate Floor without recommendation.
Thomas is considered to be one of the most conservative Justices in the history of the Court.
He was born at home in a house without electricity or Plumbing in Pin Point, Georgia south of Savannah. Source: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/congress/senate/judiciary/sh102-1084pt4/1015-1018.pdf
