As a young man, he enjoyed playing American football, athletics and body-Surfing, although an accident whilst taking part in the latter sport put paid to a possible sporting career. He also enjoyed playing cards and chess, and was very active in the Freemasons, being elected to high office in his regional Lodge and also in the whole US branch of the organisation. He was passionately right-wing, and (whilst stopping short of Fascism) was vehemently anti-Communist and (I'm sorry to say) pro-McCarthy, supporting the anti-Communist witch-hunts of the '50s and assisting in the blacklisting of fellow actors he suspected of having liberal sympathies during that time. He starred in a number of anti-Communist films, was a member of the John Birch Committee, was suspicious of John F.Kennedy, and strongly supported the Vietnam War. However, in later life his views mellowed a bit- he believed in the innocence of Patty Hearst, supported Panama's claim that it should have the Canal returned to it, and in the last few years of his life questioned the legitimacy of nuclear weapons. He also never allowed social causes to be mixed up with his political views, being a strong supporter of animal welfare with a particular fondness for dogs. Like many cowboy actors he loved a good drink, enjoyed shooting and marksmanship, and had an eye for pretty ladies!
