If you read the book we learn that the objects in Tom Riddles Cabinet are objects he had stolen from other children from the orphanage. When Albus (Dumbledore) burns the dresser the objects rattle to be let out because they do not belong to Tom Riddle. That is why Albus informs Riddle that there is no tolerance for stealing and misbehaving at Hogwarts. They also symbolize the Horcruxes. Not that Voldemort would ever use a yo-yo or any other petty object that was taken from the child to store his soul in, but it proves to us that Riddle liked things that weren't his.
