Simple pulse phaser cannons means the beam is pulsated rapidly instead of being constant

the advantage of pulse means more energy can be directed quickly then a constant beam

most starships have phaser banks which is automated anyway to fire in pulse sucession meaning it pulses this increase phasers power more easily

however it can be constant beam but drains the energy reserves more quickly
