When Shirley was tiny, her hair was blonde (as her Mother's had been as a young child.) Shirley's hair, as her child star years progressed, was said (at a certain point) to be lightened by her mother with a gentle peroxide (hair) dye/lightener.

As Shirley grew slightly older (approx late 1937) her hair was left naturally darker...it was said to be a brown with reddish/rusty streaks/highlights. On film (late 1937/1938) it looked as if it were brown. (In 1939's color film Little Princess Shirley seemed to have very reddish hair.)

By 1944 (as a teenager) her hair was red, slightly auburn...her first husband nicknamed her "Red."

When Shirley married her second husband Charles Black, her hair seemed black in color. (Also her face makeup was much more heavily applied and darker.)

When she branched out somewhat on her own (political career as ambassador) her hair seemed brown with a reddish rinse(?), very pretty.

Answer #2When Shirley Temple was little, she had her hair colored blonde golden curls!! But when she was ten, her mother let her hair go to it's natural color... Reddish and golden-ish... It's not like it was orange or red exactly! Now it is brunette.
