Santa Barbara is the name of a town 2 hours North of Los Angles. The name is also used for the surrounding communities, such as Montecito, Summerland, 'Noleta' area west of Santa Barbara, Goleta, UCSB and some as far North as Santa Ynez. Many people use Santa Barbara for their mailing and street address even though they do not live within the city proper.
I know that Oprah Winfrey and Rob Lowe (my sister goes to school with his sons!) both live in montecito. Julia dreyfus (lorraine from seinfeild), John Cleese, and Chritopher Loyd (the old guy from back to the future) all live somewhere in montecito or santa barbara. Also T.C. Boyle the writer lives down by the ocean (mirimar beach) in montecito.
