This is from the story of the Israelites who, whilst crossing the desert, began complaining against God and the prophet Moses. God punished the people by sending serpents among them and many were bitten and died before Moses interceded by praying to God to forgive them.
God instructed Moses to raise a venomous snake on a staff and all the wounded Israelites who looked on it were immediately healed. The Serpent Cross draws a parallel with Christ, who was raised upon a cross for people to look upon and be healed. this is in the Old Testament.

What is the meaning behind Edwards elric crest?
The crest is a version of an old symbol called a "flamel". The flamel, in it's historic version, was a snake pinned to a cross. Author Hiromu Arakawa adapted the symbol for its use in FullMetal Alchemist. It's the symbol of Nickolas Flamel, who was the alchemist that we link to the Philosopher's Stone nowadays (In things such as Harry Potter or FMA). I guessing that Ed wears the crest because it symbolizes his search for the Philosoper's Stone, even if the term or name "Flamel" don't ever show up in the Manga or Anime. Hope it helps!
Can people do alchemy like in Fullmetal Alchemist?
i dont think alchemy is real, the closet they've come to it is transmuting lead to gold, i think. mabey it worked in the past. you can read up on it on wikipedia, just type in "alchemy" or "alchemist" hoped that helped ^^ Unfortunately, alchemy is completely different on this side of the gate. Sorry to disappoint you but from what I've read so far, its just chemically breaking down elements. but then again, i could be wrong. Fullmetal Alchemist actually inspired me to become an alchemist, but i'm sure i'm not the only one. :) maybe looking up some books or the internet. but it won't be easy. It's hard to find basically "step one" like in intro as to what it is, how it works, and a test experiment like Ed's bird on the floor or the origami crane. I wish alchemy on this side was exactly the same as Amestris, or that there was at least some way we could cross over. I still haven't found what I'm looking for, most of these books are about the Philosopher's Stone. And once again, making one isn't the same as Amestrian alchemy.
