The benefits of being an actor are:

  • Working at a craft you love with all your heart
  • Being able to play certain characters
  • Expressing most of your emotions for different movies
  • Of course making good money is a factor
  • Have fans scream out your name (you may have to change your name, but more young actors are keeping their given names.)
  • The feeling you have accomplished something and that you can roll in the glory of perhaps winning an Oscar for a good performance or Emmy.

Although you didn't ask here is a reality check about being an actor:

  • A very low percentage of young people are lucky enough to get into acting and you may be used and abused for bit parts and then you may not make the grade to becoming a popular actor.
  • If you are one of the lucky ones then your Agent will work his/her tail off to get you a role in a movie with one of the studios and you are basically a 'piece of meat' and a money machine. The more popular you are the more money your Agent and the Studio makes off you and that's all they care about. The odd time you may be lucky enough to find an Agent that really does care about you on a more personal basis, but it's rare.
  • If you are lucky enough to become popular then you actually really work your butt off. You are up at all hours; may have to travel to several cities or towns or even countries to make a movie. You may be gone for weeks to months. You may have to work in all types of weather and get over come fears you may have. Many actors have a fear of heights and water. If you think that a 'stand-in' will take your place you're earning the big bucks and are expected to do it and will be ordered to do it. The only break you'll get is a stunt person because the studio doesn't want to have their popular actor injured.
  • You may have to lose weight for one role and gain weight for another (not good on your body.) In most cases your Agent or the Studio don't care how you lose it, but lose it you must and so often the actor (especially women) will use diet pills which can be dangerous. Both male and female actors often get into the trap of 'uppers' and 'downers' to stay awake and go to sleep because they have to work long and odd hours.
  • You have to exercise and have a tough work-out to keep yourself in shape. Some women actors as well as men may need to 'bulk up' for a role and it takes many hours to months sometimes to get the effect the director wants for that particular role.
  • Your private life is no longer your own. You may love it at first when you are out trying to shop or just have a normal personal life and all the fans are all over you, but it only takes once (and it will) if you are extremely popular that hundreds upon thousands of fans can riot and it's a frightening experience for the actor (some actors have actually spoken of this in interviews.) Some fans want a piece of the actor's hair, clothing, etc.
  • You will find the Paparazzi your friend when you first start out and welcome them, but if you make the grade as a popular actor then the Paparazzi will be all over you like white on rice and not even your home or property is safe from them. If you sneeze the wrong way they are there! It affects your love life. YOUR life on your personal time is no longer your life, but that of the Paparazzi and all those fans.
  • If you make it your star is not always going to remain bright and there will always be another actor right behind you like your shadow that could well surpass you so it's time to know when you star is dimming and either get into Directing or get out of the business altogether.
  • Drug dealers see big money in actors and as soon as some young actors become a popular commodity and like to party and spend some of that money they are earning the drug dealers are more than willing to buzz around them and are often successful. That's why you hear of so many actors having problems with drugs.

So, if you think you can handle the down side of acting after enjoying fame for so long and love the craft then do it!
