Well i would say that some major symbols in House of the Scorpion are:

- A scorpion - (duh) because scorpions are deadly, just as El Patron. Or it can symbolize the whole family because they are all wicked, cunning and deceitful people who harm friends and enemies alike. Also the scorpion could mean a man that has no religion and does not honor his own word (doesn't keep promises).

- Opium poppy - , because the country is called Opium and their main export is Opium (its a drug)

- A lock - , because El Patron seems to keep everything, and everyone in Opium locked up so it/they will never leave, all except Matt of course.

- DNA - , because Matt was "created" by scientists by them taking DNA from El Patron when he was 40 (I think it was just a skin sample).

- Chip - , because the opium farmers were eejits, a human that has had a microchip implanted into their brain that allows them to only follow orders given to them by their master, but they also cannot do anything unless their master tells them to, so that means that if they are working, they will continue to do so until they die unless their master tells them to stop.
