He says, "Stay Alive." twice within the first book. First time he says it, Katniss becomes enraged, due to the fact he says it drunkly and with no meaning.

Later in the book, he says the same thing to Katniss before he says goodbye to her.

She then feels as if this is really the final threshold for her and her adversary Peeta.

The advice holds more weight the second time because Haymitch uses it as a sort of twisted goodbye, conveying how much he cares for her.
