Her first released film was A Day of a Man of Affairs(1929) (Short Film); but she had actually performed in two short films prior to this also filmed in 1929: A Night in the Dormitory and Campus Sweethearts; but they were not released until 1930.

She followed up those three shorts with her first full length film Young Man of Manhattan (1930).

After fifteen more movies, the first film she received critical acclaim for was Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933) but she was not in the top billing. The film also included her first famous singing performance where she popularized the song: 'We're in the money'.

The first movie where she began being receiving top billing as a star was in Twenty Million Sweethearts (1934) with Dick Powell.

She is perhaps most famous for her performances alongside Fred Astaire; she performed in ten movies with him, their first as partners was Flying Down to Rio (1933)
