Frank Bruno was the most popular boxer since Henry Cooper, during the 80's his corny catchphrases and genuine nature adhered him to the British Public and he became Britains most popular sportsman and was loved by all. Frank and his then wife Laura were as well known as the Beckhams are now and were always in the National press, magazines and on television programmes. Some boxing purists writtened him off but Frank may not have been the most naturally talented boxer but he was always in fantastic condition, had a booming jab and was an all round heavy hitter and was highly dedictated. Whilst often remembered for the fights he lost many people tend to forget he was the first person to visibly hurt the then unbeaten Mike Tyson and was beating and outjabbing Lennox Lewis ( depsite many writers saying Lennox was the fastest jabber since ALI ) until walking on to a left hook . Frank won the Heavyweight title of the world at Wembley Stadium when he outpointed Oliver McCall over 12 rounds on an emotional evening.

Frank along with Lenny Henry,and John Barnes became extremley popular black entertainers/sportsmen and helped to bring down racial barriers. The colour of skin was irrelevant and they became popular because of their personalities and dedication. Until then most popular british Sportsmen and entertainers were white.
