He never made it to trial. As he was being moved from the Dallas police station he was shot by a man named Jack Ruby in the parking garage. Ruby came out from the crowd as he was escorted by the police and shot him point blank. This was seen on alive TV (no tape then) by millions of people. Ruby was arrested and tried for the killing and died in prison of cancer.
