I think "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" is right. Director John Ford made three "US Cavalry" movies, all starring John Wayne, but the song was probably written for the movie, and did not become a real cavalry song until later. Yellow is the color of cavalry (Blue for infantry, Red for artillery).
