Yes; it was very different from other Disney releases in that it wasn't based off of a fairy tale, but a specific story. Furthermore, it was much darker than other Disney animated features, and wasn't a musical. It was the most expensive Disney film of its time, and the most expensive animated film up until then as well. It was also the first Disney film to merit a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). It was released when Disney's animation studio was not doing so well financially, but the studio revived itself when "The Little Mermaid" came out in 1989. Since then, "Black Cauldron" has gone largely forgotten: you won't be able to find memorabilia of it in any of the Disney parks (anymore); there are no rides for it, and it is not yet available on DVD; however, releases of it on DVD are expected in June 2009 in the U.S. and UK. It is not yet known if it will be the uncut edition or not, but at least some deleted scenes are expected to be on the "Special Edition" DVD, as well as the original theatrical trailer....

Never... at least most likely never.
The Black Cauldron was considered a bomb so it's doubtful Disney would want to revisit something that was known to have failed the first time around, although considering the announcements of live action remakes of Disney animated films recently, Cinderella, Beauty & the Beast, Dumbo, Mulan, Aladdin, The Lion King, Winnie the pooh & The Little Mermaid, who knows... maybe Disney will take another crack at The Black Cauldron.
If you mean the movie, it probably is, but the book is about PG because there is violence and blood
