Automail is basically an 'artificial limb', and artificial limbs do exist. They help people that have missing body parts like arms and legs, so that they can still lead a normal life. They are not called 'automail' though. Sometimes these artificial limbs are also called 'prosthetic limbs'.
One of the earliest known prosthetic limb dated back to 300 BC. The prosthetic limb was a leg made of copper and wood. It was found in a grave in Capua, Italy.
No, Pinako and Winry took Wrath and gave him automail limbs since Edward was supposed to get his back, but he lost them once again trying to bring Alphonse's body back. Wrath ended running away once they finished his automail.
Winry works with her grandmother in her automail shop back in Ed and Al's hometown, Resembool.
Unfortunately nO. Technology isn't that good yet. Having a metal arm like that is heavy and what power source can it run off without permenantely plugging itself to a power socket?
Winry Rockbell is the childhood friend of Ed and Alphonse Elric as well as their automail mechanic .
Yes he does in Brotherhood but also in the original. But in both Al only get's it back after Ed pays the price. **SPOILER** In the end, for Brotherhood, Al sacrifices his body so Ed can use his other arm to fight "Father". Ed turns down many things, such as a phlosiphers stone, and when he is about to give up he has the idea of giving up his alchemy for Al to come back in him body. Al ends up back in the real world with his body and Ed with his automail arm gone but still keeping his automail leg.
If you mean the metal limbs, it's called Automail.

It's time for a quick Amestris history lesson. Think back to the war in Ishval. Lots of people died, and even more were injured. Many lost limbs. Prosthetic technology developed very quickly to help crippled people get moving again. Rush Valley became the automail capital of Amestris. The exact date is never mentioned, but if you check the episodes in the third arc (3rd theme song, Golden Time Lover) during the part where the Elrics visit Briggs, there is a scene where the year of the Ishvalan Civil War is mentioned. You probably could estimate a year when automail is developed from that.
No! He certainly did not turn himself into a homunculi. In the last episode he got transferred to the 'real world' as a result to bring Alphonse's body back from 'the gate'. Unfortunately, he still had his automail arm and leg but he did succeed in bringing Al's body back (even though Al lost his memory about his life in the armour and his body looked exactly the same as the day they tried to bring their mother back)
It is sort of a joke because his right arm and left leg are metal (automail) prosthetics.
It was revealed that Edward had married Winry Rockbell, his long-time childhood friend and automail mechanic. After a alchemist-style proposal, we see a picture of several people, including Ed with a wedding ring and Winry, each holding a child (presumably their children).
I'm sure you could buy one to function as like a sleeve over an arm that a blacksmith on eBay made, but unfortunately automail is a fictional concept. If you are cosplaying i recommend you look for a paper model or make it yourself so it is lightweight.
FullMetal is the name given to Ed by the State when he passes the test to become a state alchemist. he gets this name because of his automail. Hiromu Arakawa (the author of FMA) has said in an interview that she got the name Fullmetal from the movie "Full Metal Jacket", and said that it just sounded cool.
