Although in the real world, Kouichi does wake up from his comma. This occurred when Kouji and the others arrive at the hospital and Kouji, seeing Kouichi there releases a single tear falling onto Kouichi, waking him up in the process.
But technically, he was not dead when he went to the Digital World, he just had an out of body experience, until he woke up in the real world.
