He saw Snape kill him. Also - as additional confirmation - the fact that the binding curse stopped working (that Harry Potter could move again) could only mean that the caster (Dumbledore) had died.

∙ 10y agoHarry and Hermione were very attached to Hagrid and for his sake, wanted to save Buckbeak. And, as you may have heard in the movies or read in the books, nothing is hidden from Dumbeldore, so, perhaps this was the reason.
