Did scar die in fullmetal alchemist?

He dies in the first anime, but not in the second.

In the 2003 anime, FullMetal Alchemist, while in Lior, Kimbley does a transmutation on Alphonse which makes his armor slowly turn into an explosive substance. Once Al has been completely turned into it, Kimbley ment for him to explode, thus killing Al. Scar was planning to perform a transmutation to create the Philosopher's Stone using the military personel in the city. He then wanted to use the stone to save Ishbal. Instead, though, he runs into Alphonse and realizes what Kimbley did. Scar remembers how Kimbley killed his brother, and he is emotionally moved. He doesn't want Ed to lose his brother, so he sacrifices himself as part of the transmutation and creates the Philosopher's Stone inside of Alphonse's armor, making Al into a living Stone.

In the 2009 anime, he ends up helping Ed, Al, and Mustang and his men to save Amestris from Father, since Scar's older brother was the one who discovered how to reverse the Philosopher's Stone transmutation. He recruits Ishvallans to help him place the points of the circle across the nation of Amestris. At the end of the series, he casts off the name "Scar" and declares he doesn't need a name. He then begins to work with Major Miles to improve Ishval-Amestris relations.
