{| |- | Sherlock Holmes becomes good friends with Dr. John Watson. They were introduced by a mutual friend and shared a flat together. Watson chronicled Holmes' adventures, many that he participated in. |}
Gladstone was the dogs name in 'Sherlock Holmes' (2009), and it was actually Watson's dog first, Watson brought Gladstone with him when he moved in.
------
Neither Sherlock Holmes nor Watson are ever said to have a dog in the books though, on occasion, they borrowed dogs such as Toby in 'The Sign of Four.' Pompey in 'The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter,' or the unnamed dog in 'A Study in Scarlet.'
"Now would you mind going down and fetching that poor little devil of a terrier which has been bad so long, and which the landlady wanted you to put out of its pain yesterday." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'A Study in Scarlet'
Toby proved to be an ugly, long-haired, lop-eared creature, half spaniel and half lurcher, brown and white in colour, with a very clumsy, waddling gait. -- John Watson, The Sign of Four
___When we descended I followed Holmes into the stable-yard, where he opened the door of a loose-box and led out a squat, lop-eared, white-and-tan dog, something between a beagle and a foxhound.
___"Let me introduce you to Pompey," said [Holmes]. 'The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter'
I understand Gladstone was an English bulldog in the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie, but it belonged to Watson.
No Sherlock Holmes did not own a dog. However, he is rather fond of Toby, a bloodhound that he occasionally borrows for tracking. The other main canine would be the one in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Dogs play a key part in a couple of other stories, including Silver Blaze and The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter.

No, the phrase "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" is not from a Sherlock Holmes story. It is actually the title of a novel written by Mark Haddon, and the phrase is a reference to a Sherlock Holmes story called "Silver Blaze."
Sherlock Holmes's is the more proper form though Sherlock Holmes' is also acceptable. Please check the link below.
