I have never heard of anything stronger than pot. He did have a drinking problem and he struggled with depression off and on thoughout his life. If he did in fact use drugs it did not amount to anything more than occational use or the whole world would have known about it. With the tabloids nothing stays a secret for long.

I highly doubt it because he was a true All American Guy! He did drink and smoke a lot and that was part and parcel to his death (lung cancer.)

In his Playboy interview, John Wayne admitted to trying pot back in the late 40s.

No. Although Wayne enjoyed drinking beer and whiskey, usually under social circumstances, he never experienced any uncontrollable Alcoholism... at least that anybody knew of. He did, however, portray alcoholics in film, most famously Rooster Cogburn.

Before his diagnosis for lung cancer Wayne had a five pack a day habit. After his surgery he claimed to have quit but I had read several places that he was still smoking 'on the sly' until his death in 1979. Whether this is true or not I have no idea.
