It depended on what point in her life. At certain points she would smoke closer to 1 pack per day and yes, sadly, at other points she would smoke as many as 5. But let's remember that it wasn't really known until the 1970's just how bad smoking was for you and by then the poor thing would have already been hooked, having been introduced to them as a teenager, purportedly not only because in 1929-1969 it was considered "cool" or "elegant" or "mature" or "sexy" or "fashionable" etc. But also, tragically, because she and the other kids were practically literally starving to death due to the Nazis in occupied Holland, and one of the effects of cigarettes is that they can temporarily reduce hunger. Keep in mind cigarettes are really a terrible way to manage weight and if you are a healthy person with a weight problem, there are far better ways to help yourself such as proper eating and proper exercise. Cigarettes, along with early malnutritition, led to her untimely death from cancer at only 63.

Allowed to smoke? Very much so. They chained smoke, traded cigarettes, mooched cigarettes, dreamed of cigarettes and even got them with all their meal packs. They even got matches in those meal packs. Smoking in the 1940s was as popular as breathing, eating and sleeping and you know what else.
