The Xbox was created as a way for gamers to do what they do best. "Starting today with Xbox 360, our ambition is to revolutionize the way people think about fun."

Microsoft saw profit in the industry, and it's clearly worked in their favor. As long as there's a market for games, Microsoft will no doubt continue to modify and renew the Xbox console series.
