So that Nintendo could make money. A sequel to Melee was announced relatively quickly after its release, but since the Wii itself didn't come out until after the midpoint of the decade, they held off on development, only releasing a trailer at the 2006 E3 convention. That's really the only reason a video game is released: to make money. Maybe to help people have fun, which it does; but mostly to make money.
