Originally, Shigeru Miyamoto was going to name him Christo, after his grandfather. It was changed to Link to reflect that he functioned as the players' link to the world. Although, in-game he can have any name, because you give him a name of your choice at the start.

Why do all of the Zelda games have legend of Zelda instead of legend of link?
Because, in the first game, Link goes out to save the legendary princess Zelda. Link generally starts out as a kid only the locals know about, then becomes a hero. Zelda is always well known. It makes more sense that the legend is about Zelda, doesn't it?
