you should remove it anytime the flag is raised or lowered, when a national anthem is played or at a funeral or in the presence of a funeral procession. i would tip mine at a half mast flag in respect.
Its also a tradition to tip your hat and greet women again to show humility and respect.
as i have read on some other pages it was the knights removing their head dress and helmet that got this started.
I have noticed a theme that to remove your hat is to show those around you that you respect them and others this in turn endows you with the knowledge of being a man.

at a funeral or at the procession
to cover an embarrassing "part" that may be exposed on you or someone else.
and if your not sure just take it off rather be safe than thought of as a jerk.
