In minecraft, various minerals/ores need a certain quality of pickaxe to mine them:

To mine a stone block and get a drop, you need to use a wooden pickaxe or better.

To mine a cobblestone block and get a drop, you need to use a wooden pickaxe or better.

To mine a coal ore block and get a drop, you need to use a wooden pickaxe or better.

To mine an iron ore block and get a drop, you need to use a stone pickaxe or better.

To mine a lapis lazuli block and get a drop, you need to use a stone pickaxe or better.

To mine a gold ore block and get a drop, you need to use an iron pickaxe or better.

To mine a diamond ore block and get a drop, you need to use an iron pickaxe or better.

To mine an obsidian block and get a drop, you need to use a diamond pickaxe or better.

(this list is not complete)

Quality order of Pickaxes (and other tools)

*1 is the worst, 4 is the best*

1. Wood

2. Stone

3. Iron

4. Diamond

You can also make tools out of gold, but they have a very low durability (even worse than wood)

Gold pickaxes can successfully mine coal ore, iron ore, gold ore, lapis lazuli ore, diamond ore, stone, and cobblestone. There may be more. They also are very quick, but most likely not worth it.
